Queen of Martyrs Science/STEM Lab

Queen of Martyrs is excited to share the news that they have just opened a new state-of-the-art Science/STEM Lab. This lab will help to better provide rigorous learning to facilitate the advancement of our students. STEM education is active and focuses on a student-centered learning environment. Students engage in questioning, problem-solving, collaboration, and hands-on activities while they address real-life issues.

Queen of Martyrs has partnered with LabLearner to make this Science/STEM Lab possible. LabLearner was one of the first programs to teach using a “spiraling curriculum”. Rather than having isolated categories like biology, chemistry, or physics, LabLearner has a spiraling curriculum where scientific concepts build upon each other, year after year. The experiments within LabLearner were designed to have essential scientific themes “spiral” throughout a student’s elementary education.

Queen of Martyrs Principal, Kathleen Tomaszewski, believes a school needs to keep up-to-date with the latest trends and technology, “I believe STEM is so important because we are seeing a shift in the way that we should engage our students in the learning process.  STEM and hands-on learning will help our children to better process and retain information. LabLearner allows them to get their hands ‘dirty’ through a variety of experiences, she said.

This curriculum will allow students to dig deeper into a concept rather than just reading about it, completing a worksheet, and taking a test. Each topic involves three or more “investigations” to help deepen understanding. This building upon new information leads to the creation of permanent new memories. The more extensively new information is processed, the better it will be remembered.

The design of the lab also assists in other areas of study. The skills used within the lab range from mathematical, reading and writing to critical thinking and fine motor skills, providing additional educational benefits. The lab provides over 60 core experience learning labs that will give students the opportunity to use microscopes, beakers, balances, and many more science-based tools.

Science/STEM proficient students are logical thinkers, effective communicators and are technologically, scientifically, and mathematically literate.  Having a fully equipped STEM Lab at Queen of Martyrs will provide our teachers and students the space and resources needed to allow for personalized learning and engage students of all ages, interests, and abilities. This STEM Lab will complete our effort in implementing STEM Education and putting our school ahead of the rest.

The LabLearner lab included all furniture, science equipment and storage necessary to run the program. The in-school laboratory is complete with research-grade science equipment and supplies, all set up by the company.  Teachers were given training in the implementation of the program and ongoing collaboration with LabLearner Scientists is an asset to this curriculum.
