Science/STEM Lab

In 2018, Queen of Martyrs opened a new state-of-the-art Science/STEM Lab to better facilitate the advancement of QM students. STEM education is active and focuses on a student-centered learning environment. Students engage in questioning, problem-solving, collaboration, and hands-on activities while they address real-life issues.

Partnering with LabLearner to make this Science/STEM Lab possible, LabLearner was one of the first programs to teach using a “spiraling curriculum”. Rather than having isolated categories like biology, chemistry, or physics, LabLearner has a spiraling curriculum where scientific concepts build upon each other, year after year. The experiments within LabLearner were designed to have essential scientific themes “spiral” throughout a student’s elementary education. This curriculum allows students to dig deeper into a concept rather than just read about it, complete a worksheet, and take a test. Each topic involves three or more “investigations” to help deepen understanding. This building upon new information leads to the creation of permanent new memories. The more extensively new information is processed, the better it is remembered.

The design of the lab also assists in other areas of study. The skills used within the lab range from mathematical, reading and writing to critical thinking and fine motor skills, providing additional educational benefits. The lab provides over 60 core experience learning labs that gives students the opportunity to use microscopes, beakers, balances, and many more science-based tools.

Studies show science/STEM proficient students are logical thinkers, effective communicators and are technologically, scientifically, and mathematically literate.  Having a fully equipped Science/STEM Lab provides QM teachers and students the space and resources needed to allow for personalized learning and engage students of all ages, interests, and abilities.

If you would like a tour of Queen of Martyrs School to learn more about our Science/STEM lab and see first hand all that we have to offer, please call the school office at 708-422-1540.  In addition to tours, shadow days are available. Students are welcome to spend a half-day or full day with us to help them learn more about our school and experience a day in the life of a Queen of Martyrs Wildcat!
